A Central Florida bus driver may face disciplinary action after video showed him leaving a passenger-filled bus running with the door open while he purchased a pack of cigarettes, officials said.
The Votran driver, who was not identified by Local 6 News, was driving bus No. 3 on North Street in Daytona Beach at about 8:45 when he left the bus and went into a convenience store before returning several minutes later.
County officials said they are reviewing the video obtained by Local 6 News and in-bus video before making a decision about the driver.
Votran policy states that drivers should only leave their bus unattended for an emergency drink or bathroom break. County officials said they have built-in breaks for drivers, but riders said this type of incident happens a lot.
Officials said they are also concerned that the bus was left in a high-crime area.
"You got people's children on the bus, kids on the bus," an unidentified man said.
"Someone could just steal the bus," another unidentified man said.
"If he went to the bathroom then got cigarettes, that's OK. But if he didn't go to the bathroom and got cigarettes, that's just unheard of," an unidentified woman said.
"They should fire him. That's what they should do," a man said.
